Laurels

The laurels are a final series of projects done at the end of fifth grade. We have one for Music, Science, Math,
History, Ancient Greece, Reading, Writing, P.E., and Foreign Language. At the end of the year, we have a greek games and the fifth grade is split into groups- city states, i was in Delos. We also perform a play
of the Odyssey, I have the part of Penelope. To graduate from the lower school we dress in greek chitons or peploses and recieve our Laurel reaves.

Writing Laurel (ZINE)
The ZINE I wrote is a series of pieces written by me such as a memoir piece, descriptive piece, persuasive piece,
and a short story and as an addendum I had included my play the I wrote when a Philadelphia Young Playwrites teacher came and taught us how to write plays.

Reading Laurel
For our reading laurel, we were required to chose an author that wrote a book we read in school and read 2 more books by He/She. I chose Linda Sue Park and read the books A Single Shard and Project Mulberry

Science Laurel
For our science laurel, we did a box fold of paper, decorating it form a unit we had studied in school. I did mine on ancient greece and on the three box folds i put a laurel reefe, a temple, then a torch, a put a rising sun in the backround, mini temple in the back, and grass on the front.

P.E. laurel
for our P.E. laurel, we were required to run a marathon (25 miles) over the course of about 2 months. we ran around the turf feild, 7 laps around it equled
a mile. w were aloud to do only 12 miles at home. we kept track of how many miles we had by…. use popsicle sticks to keep track of how many laps around the turf you had, once you had seven, you filled out a mini sheet to show you had a mile. at the end of each recess you put how many sheets you had in a cup. our teachers (in my case Mrs. Sweetman) would keep track of your miles my taking them out of the cup and moving your flag on a poster to the amount of miles you had. there was a sheet underneeth that showed how many you had.

Music Laurel
for our music laurel, we had to learn the Olympic fanfare on our recorder, this piece we perform on graduation (greek day). We also had to write a paragraph about an ancient greek instrument and either build that instrument or make a poster containing a drawing of 5 instruments and little blurbs about each. I chose the Kithara, and I built it.

Math Laurel
for our math laurel we had to complete of packed the contained 20 pages of math, we had to complete at least 15 of them. we also had to write 2 paragraphs, paragraph number one was about why we should use the metric system or how we use math in every day life, i chose the second choice
our second paraagraph explained how we solved page number 7 in the packet

History Laurel
our history laurel was a book we created with two pages for each civilization we studied throughout the year, each civilization was required to have at least 5 facts about the civilization, and at least 3 visuals. in the front we had a passport with a picture of ourselves, birth date etc. and what time we "entered and exited" each civilization (what time we started studying it) and a stamp for that place. another option was to create a digital book called a mixbook, this had the same requirments just no passport. I choose the real book, not mixbook.

Forign language laurel
for our forign language laurel, we were to create a french dialouge with our given partner the dialouge had many requirments, on was that we had to have a spanish part to it too. when we finished our dialouge, we had to perform it in french class and get graded.

Ancient Greece laurel
for our greek laurel, we had to create a greek city-state. the city-state had to be described and shown like a real ancient greek city-state. there needed to be a map of it, a snapshot of life in the city-state, a flag, it's name, and some sort of myth about the city-state that included real greek gods, one made up one if wanted. we also needed a brochure. my greek city-state was called Artista, it's patron goddeses are Artemis and Photista, Photista was my made-up goddess, she was the goddess of light and joy.
